Sydney FC vs Adelaide United – Match Highlights | Isuzu UTE A-League 2024-25 | Round 17
Sydney FC surged into fourth position on the Isuzu UTE A-League table following a stellar offensive performance that saw them decisively defeat Adelaide United 4-1 at Allianz Stadium.
The Sky Blues struck first in the 36th minute, with Joe Lolley finishing off a fabulous team move to score his ninth goal of the season on Saturday night, putting Sydney ahead 1-0.
Within mere seconds of the second half kickoff, Sydney FC caught Adelaide off guard, doubling their lead to 2-0 as Lolley set up Patryk Klimala, who skillfully placed the ball past goalkeeper Ethan Cox from close range.
Adelaide clawed one back just three minutes later when winger Dylan Pierias sprinted down the right flank and unleashed a low shot that beat Sydney keeper Harrison Devenish-Meares at the near post.
Adrian Segecic, just seven minutes after coming off the bench, scored Sydney FC’s third, tapping in from inside the six-yard box and sealing the victory. Anthony Caceres then added a fourth goal in the 83rd minute, reinforcing the Sky Blues’ commanding performance.
This result elevates Sydney FC to fourth in the standings, ending a three-match winless streak, while Adelaide’s loss means they missed the opportunity to narrow the gap to league leaders Auckland FC, who now sit five points clear at the top.
With new centre-back Alex Grant signed but not eligible to play just yet, along with Hayden Matthews having departed and Alexandar Popovic unavailable, coach Steve Talay gave a debut to 20-year-old central defender Kyle Shaw, who partnered captain Rhyan Grant in defence.
Shaw, a former junior player who rejoined the Sky Blues in October 2024, was quickly involved in the action, receiving a solid challenge from goalkeeper Devenish-Meares during a defensive free-kick.
Adelaide sought to close the gap on Auckland FC and nearly took the lead in the 12th minute, but Archie Goodwin’s misplaced square pass to Pierias was a significant let-off for Sydney FC midfielder Leo Sena, who had been dispossessed near his own box.
The Sydney goalkeeper was called into action in the 16th minute, making an excellent reflex save to deny Stefan Mauk after a powerful shot that deflected off Grant.
As the match progressed, the reintroduced Caceres saw a fierce effort tipped over the bar by Adelaide keeper Cox. Shortly after, Pierias curled a left-footed shot wide as both teams began to trade chances.
Sydney FC star Anas Ouahim was just inches away from breaking the deadlock twice in three minutes. His first shot—a dipping effort from the edge of the box—rolled narrowly past the post. Moments later, he danced past several Adelaide defenders inside the area only to see his curling shot magnificently saved by Cox.
In the 32nd minute, goalkeeper Cox nearly faltered again as Klimala nicked the ball off him, setting up Ouahim for a tap-in, but Panagiotis Kikianis cleared the ball off the line just in time.
As the pressure mounted on the Adelaide defence, Sydney finally broke through with a beautifully orchestrated move. Caceres, having possession on Adelaide’s right, found Klimala in the box. Despite a heavy first touch, Klimala produced an exquisite back-heel to Lolley, who coolly slotted the ball past Cox to open the scoring at 1-0.
Adelaide almost retaliated immediately, but Devenish-Meares pulled off two quickfire saves, the latter denying Goodwin from close range, securing a 1-0 lead for the home side at half-time.
The home crowd were treated to another sight as new signing Grant was showcased to the fans during the break.
Entering the second half trailing 1-0, Adelaide would have hoped for a quick equaliser; however, the start could not have been worse for Carl Veart’s men. Securing the ball in Adelaide’s half, Corey Hollman delivered a perfect through-ball for Lolley, who returned the favour to Klimala for a quick second goal just 14 seconds after the restart.
Adelaide responded admirably, getting back into the match just three minutes later. Pierias, racing down the right, chose to shoot rather than cross, catching Devenish-Meares off guard and scoring to make it 2-1.
With Pierias continuing to be a thorn in the side of Sydney’s defence, he outpaced Courtney-Perkins before finding substitute Luka Jovanovic, whose shot went wide. Sydney FC were now focused on securing the win.
After a counter-attack down the right, Lolley sent a low cross to the near post, which was cleared to the edge of the box. Sena slipped as he attempted to volley, and the ball fortuitously fell to the unmarked Segecic, who tapped in to extend the lead to 3-1.
Talay brought on Brazilian star Douglas Costa in the 83rd minute, marking his return from a hamstring injury, and Allianz Stadium erupted once more as the home team scored again shortly after.
A fluid exchange of passes between Costa, Courtney-Perkins, Segecic, and Caceres culminated with Caceres entering the box and curling a low shot into the far corner, making it 4-1.
This commanding victory halted Sydney FC’s two-match losing streak and lifted them up to fourth on the ladder, whereas Adelaide remains five points behind league leaders Auckland FC after facing only their second defeat of the season.
