The Central Coast Mariners secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Auckland FC at Go Media Stadium, leading to the Newcastle Jets being crowned the 2025-26 Isuzu UTE A-League Premiers.
Amid several lightning delays, Auckland’s aspirations for the Premiership came to an end due to Ali Auglah’s goal in the first half.
While the home side tested Mariners keeper Andrew Redmayne with a few early attempts, the match truly ignited in the 13th minute. This was instigated by a lengthy VAR review concerning a potential act of violent conduct.
The incident involved Mariners defender James Donachie, who appeared to step on Auckland striker Sam Cosgrove while he was on the ground after a header contest. However, after nearly two minutes of deliberation, referee Jonathon Barreiro opted to show just a yellow card, frustrating the home supporters.
From the subsequent free kick, Auckland forward Jesse Randall delivered a threatening strike towards goal, only for Redmayne to pull off a fantastic save. Then, against the run of play, the away side stunned the Go Media crowd.
On a rapid counter-attack, midfielder Jesse Mantell found Nathanel Blair, who quickly played a first-time pass into Auglah’s path. The forward made no mistake, sending the ball beyond goalkeeper Michael Woud to make it 1-0.

As the rain poured in Auckland, the match was interrupted by a significant lightning strike in the 34th minute, causing the game to be paused.

Once the storm passed and the second half commenced, Auckland relentlessly targeted the Mariners’ goal but repeatedly fell short against an inspired Redmayne, who denied their efforts for an equaliser.
The Mariners almost doubled their lead as Auckland’s Woud produced a brilliant save from Donachie’s header as the match neared its end, prompting Auckland to go all out to salvage their Premiership ambitions.
In the 88th minute, Mariners substitute Sabit Ngor squandered a golden opportunity to secure a 2-0 lead, steering Auglah’s brilliant pass wide of the target with an open goal in sight.
