Sydney FC now find themselves three points adrift of second-placed Auckland FC after a hard-fought 0-0 stalemate against Perth Glory at Allianz Stadium.
Both teams started slowly, but as the match unfolded, the intensity surged, and frustration grew over missed opportunities.
Perth’s goalkeeper, Matt Sutton, was instrumental in preserving the scoreline at 0-0 by the 20-minute mark; he first thwarted Al Hassan Touré’s low drive and then saved Alexandar Popović’s close-range effort from the resulting corner.
Tempers flared when Rhyan Grant executed a two-footed tackle on Sam Sutton in the 35th minute, prompting Nicholas Pennington to confront Grant, with Alexandar Popović stepping in to defend his teammate. The outcome was a yellow card shown to both Grant and Sutton.
Jaiden Kucharski almost turned the match on its head when he laid the ball back across the six-yard box, presenting a golden opportunity for either Gabriel Popović or Pennington, but neither managed to make contact.
Apostolos Stamatelopoulos had Sydney’s clearest opportunity ten minutes into the second half when he slipped behind the Perth defence, only for Matt Sutton to rush out and block his effort on goal.
As the hour mark approached, Perth introduced seasoned forward Adam Taggart to try to break the deadlock; it nearly paid off straight away when he set up Charbel Shamoon in the box, but the Iraqi international’s shot was saved by Harrison Devenish-Meares.
Sydney substitute Akol Akon came agonisingly close to netting his first-ever Isuzu UTE A-League goal in the 79th minute; the 16-year-old winger found himself unmarked to connect with Ben Garuccio’s cross, but he headed the chance wide of the mark.
Akon, along with Tiago Quintal and Joe Lacey, attempted ambitious long-range shots in the final moments of the match, but none were on target, and the match ended as a scoreless draw.
Sydney will host Auckland FC in the final round next weekend as they aim to secure a third-place finish, while Perth will wrap up their season with a home match against Brisbane Roar.
