Sydney FC now find themselves three points adrift of second-placed Auckland FC after settling for a stalemate in a fiercely contested 0-0 draw against Perth Glory at Allianz Stadium.
Both teams had a sluggish start, but the intensity and urgency increased as they squandered opportunities, leading to mounting frustrations on the field.
Glory goalkeeper Matt Sutton was instrumental in keeping the scoreline level at the 20-minute mark, first denying Al Hassan Touré’s low effort and then thwarting Alexandar Popović’s close-range attempt from the resulting corner.
The match’s tensions escalated in the 35th minute when Rhyan Grant launched a two-footed challenge on Sam Sutton. Nicholas Pennington quickly confronted Grant, and Alexandar Popović intervened to support his teammate. This altercation resulted in yellow cards for both Grant and Sutton.
Jaiden Kucharski crafted a prime opportunity when he pulled the ball back across the six-yard box, but neither Gabriel Popović nor Pennington managed to make solid contact.
Apostolos Stamatelopoulos had Sydney’s best opening of the match ten minutes into the second half, finding space behind the Perth defence. However, Sutton raced out to block the striker’s attempt on goal.
In the 60th minute, Perth introduced seasoned forward Adam Taggart in an effort to shake up the deadlock; he nearly made an immediate impact by setting up Charbel Shamoon in the box, but the Iraqi international’s shot was saved by Harrison Devenish-Meares.
Sydney substitute Akol Akon came agonisingly close to scoring his maiden Isuzu UTE A-League goal in the 79th minute. The 16-year-old winger found himself unmarked to meet Ben Garuccio’s cross but unfortunately headed the chance wide.
Akon, along with Tiago Quintal and Joe Lacey, attempted speculative shots in the closing moments of the match, but none were on target, and the encounter ultimately fizzled out into a scoreless draw.
Sydney will host Auckland FC in the final round next weekend as they aim to secure their own third-place finish, while Perth will wrap up their season with a home match against Brisbane Roar.
