Melbourne City vs Melbourne Victory – Match Highlights | Ninja A-League 2024-25 | Round 14
An incredible equaliser from Mariana Speckmaier in the 89th minute salvaged a point for Melbourne City in a thrilling 1-1 draw against Melbourne Victory at ctrl:cyber Pitch on Saturday afternoon.
Victory had been in control since the fifth minute, following Rachel Lowe’s early goal, and appeared on course to hand their fierce rivals their first defeat of the season, potentially taking the top spot on the Ninja A-League ladder. However, Speckmaier’s dramatic late strike ensured the home side secured a valuable point.
After taking the lead, Victory temporarily ascended to the top of the live table, but were ultimately forced to settle for a draw, ending their opponents’ three-match winning streak.
With the draw, City maintained their two-point lead over second-placed Victory at the summit of the table, amassing 30 points from 14 matches with eight wins, six draws, and no defeats to their name.
Victory surged ahead early when Lowe intercepted a wayward back-pass from Alexia Apostolakis, evading Rebekah Stott to win a one-on-one with Malena Mieres and clinically secure the opening goal in the bottom-left corner.
City’s Taylor Otto saw a header cleared off the line during a corner routine in the eighth minute, further illustrating the urgency for an equaliser.
City’s pressure mounted as Leticia McKenna sent a free-kick toward the top-left corner, forcing Victory keeper Courtney Newbon into a superb save.
At the opposite end, Alana Murphy’s threatening corner nearly doubled Victory’s advantage, but Claudia Bunge’s back-post effort narrowly missed the target.
Emily Gielnik next posed a threat to City’s goal with an ambitious left-footed effort from a tight angle, yet Mieres stood firm, denying her again in the first half.
Matildas winger Holly McNamara made her second consecutive start for City on Saturday, continuing her gradual return to full fitness after an ACL injury; in the 35th minute, she unleashed a low-driven shot aimed at Newbon, but the Victory keeper was quick to react and averted disaster.
Carrying their one-goal lead into half-time, Victory aimed to extend their advantage shortly after the break; however, McNamara’s shot struck the side netting, a missed opportunity to level the scores.
City ramped up the pressure at ctrl:cyber Pitch while Victory continued to thwart attempts on goal. Gielnik reminded the hosts of her threat with another attempt but was once again denied by Mieres.
CHAOS! Last-minute goal seals a stunning finish for historic Adelaide
City’s coach Michael Matricciani made changes at half-time, introducing Rhianna Pollicina and Karly Roestbakken. In the 72nd minute, Pollicina came close with a looping long-range effort that Newbon gathered after back-pedalling.
With 80 minutes gone, Gielnik had a prime opportunity to put Victory ahead 2-0, finding herself in the six-yard box thanks to a precise free-kick from Murphy. Unfortunately, her header was off target.
As the clock edged toward full-time, City finally found the equaliser they had been relentlessly pursuing. Substitute Pollicina set up Speckmaier for a front-post finish, levelling the score at 1-1 and ultimately securing a point for the league leaders in this fierce derby.
