Catch the key moments from the Round 17 Isuzu UTE A-League showdown between Sydney FC and Adelaide United.
Sydney FC’s head coach Ufuk Talay has commended the performance of central defender Kyle Shaw, who wowed fans with an outstanding display during the Sky Blues’ 4-1 triumph over Adelaide United.
Goals from Joe Lolley, Patryk Klimala, Adrian Segecic, and Anthony Caceres helped Sydney break a disappointing run of three games without a win, delivering a decisive blow to the title-contending Adelaide at Allianz Stadium.
While much of the spotlight was on Sydney’s attacking prowess, the 20-year-old Shaw went about his duties with poise alongside club captain Rhyan Grant at the core of a supportively shifting defence.
MATCH REPORT: New acquisition observes as dynamic Sydney FC overwhelms Adelaide to snap winless streak

Following Socceroo Hayden Matthews’ club-record transfer to English Championship side Portsmouth and a string of injuries, the Sky Blues have had to frequently adjust their defensive line-up in recent weeks.
Although experienced defender Alex Grant has joined the ranks, he remains unavailable for selection. Aaron Gurd is sidelined with a broken collarbone, and on-loan defender Alexandar Popovic was not risked due to a groin issue. Consequently, Talay entrusted a player who only returned to the Sky Blues late last year, having spent most of his youth career with the club.

“He was certainly impressive,” Talay remarked when he was asked about Shaw’s performance following the 4-1 victory.
“It seemed like he had played a hundred matches. He was composed and calm on the ball.
He added, “He was winning his duels when needed. As a club, we should take pride in the players progressing through our ranks.”
Having joined the Sydney FC academy at 13, the towering defender spent about four years with the club before being informed he wouldn’t make the cut, leading him to seek regular football elsewhere.
TRANSFER LATEST: Sydney FC signs Champions League runner-up as a replacement for Socceroo
He had a stint with NWS Spirit in the NSW NPL before rejoining Sydney FC’s NPL programme in November 2024.

“He was previously part of our setup. He left, gained some experience in men’s football, and has now returned. When opportunities open up due to player transfers and injuries, it allows for others to shine.”
“In these situations, one can forge a career or undermine it. I believe we’ve chosen the path of building his career.”
Shaw’s outstanding performance will undoubtedly give Talay plenty to consider regarding team selections for the Sky Blues’ forthcoming matches, particularly the Sydney Derby on February 8.
TABLE TOPPERS: Auckland FC extends lead at the summit after another dramatic victory over the Bulls
Although new signing Grant will technically be eligible for the eagerly awaited match against the Wanderers, the 31-year-old has only played one pre-season friendly since his time with Tianjin Jinmen Tiger F.C. wrapped up in November.
