In the wake of AC Milan’s slender 1-0 victory against Hellas Verona on Saturday, former striker and current club advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic took on post-match media responsibilities, asserting that his team had been the dominant force despite the narrow scoreline.
“This is an extremely significant win. While we only managed to score one goal, we were in control of the game,” he stated emphatically.
Standing in for head coach Sergio Conceicao, who was grieving the recent passing of Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa at the age of 87, Ibrahimovic stepped into the role with solemnity.
Conceicao, a former player and manager at Porto, shared a deep bond with Pinto da Costa, having celebrated numerous titles together.
“I am here because the coach is in the changing room, deeply impacted by the loss of the Porto president, who he regarded as a father figure. That is why I have assumed this role,” Ibrahimovic communicated to Sky Sport Italia.
Although Milan faced challenges in breaking down the Verona defence, they clinched the win when Santiago Gimenez found the net with a header in the 75th minute.
The Mexico international, who joined Milan earlier this month, has made an impressive start to life in Serie A by scoring in both of his league appearances thus far.
“I anticipated a positive outcome because Gimenez is a natural goal-scorer, and this team excels at getting the ball into the box. You simply need to be ready to capitalise and finish it off,” Ibrahimovic added.
“Adapting to Italian football can be challenging for foreign players, but we’re here to support him as he grows stronger, step by step.”
As Milan now shift focus to their Champions League playoff against Feyenoord, they face the task of overturning a 1-0 deficit in the second leg at the San Siro this coming Tuesday. Ibrahimovic has emphasised the necessity for squad rotation ahead of this crucial encounter.
“We’re AC Milan, so relying solely on one player would put us in a precarious position! Having a larger squad provides us with more options,” Ibrahimovic remarked.
“It’s crucial for every coach to rotate their squad when matches are so frequent, or else we risk burnout and injuries. Keeping all players engaged and confident is also pivotal,” he concluded.
