Arsenal overcame their injury challenges to narrow the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool, thanks in part to Mikel Merino, who played a pivotal role in their 2-0 victory against Leicester. Meanwhile, Omar Marmoush’s stunning hat-trick secured a 4-0 win for Manchester City over Newcastle, their rivals for a top-four spot, on Saturday.
Mikel Arteta’s team risked squandering a golden opportunity to apply pressure on Liverpool as they struggled to find their rhythm at the King Power Stadium.
With a string of injuries depleting his attacking lineup, Arteta opted to introduce Spanish midfielder Merino as an improvised striker in the latter stages of the match.
This tactic paid dividends; Merino scored twice within the final nine minutes, helping extend Arsenal’s unbeaten streak in the league to 15 matches.
In the 81st minute, Ethan Nwaneri delivered a precise cross into the box, which Merino converted with a powerful header, expertly guiding the ball past Leicester’s Mads Hermansen from close range.

Just seven minutes later, Leandro Trossard delivered another dangerous cross into the six-yard area, and Merino was there to finish, easily beating the Leicester defence to put Arsenal just four points behind Liverpool.
With Kai Havertz ruled out for the season due to a hamstring injury sustained during Arsenal’s recent training in Dubai, Arteta found himself with a significantly weakened offensive lineup, already missing Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli due to injuries.
After suffering a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle in the League Cup semi-final prior to an extended break, the Gunners made a much-needed return to form with this important win.
“In the first half, we struggled to find our rhythm due to a number of simple mistakes, but the second half was a stark contrast,” Arteta remarked.
“Mikel’s impact was significant, scoring both goals.”
Liverpool has the chance to re-establish their seven-point lead if they triumph over Wolverhampton at Anfield on Sunday.
Meanwhile, at the Etihad Stadium, Egyptian forward Marmoush netted his first goals for City since his transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt during the January window.

Marmoush kicked off his scoring spree in the 19th minute, expertly lobbing Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka after sprinting to connect with Ederson’s long kick.
Just five minutes later, he added his second with a powerful shot that deflected off Kieran Trippier, finding its way past Dubravka.
‘Remembered who we are’
The 26-year-old wasn’t finished yet, scoring his hat-trick in just 14 minutes with a composed finish after receiving a pass from Savinho in the Newcastle box.

James McAtee capped off a much-needed boost for City with an 84th-minute volley, providing a positive response after Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League first leg.
However, a worry for City arose as Erling Haaland was substituted with a potential knee injury late in the game.
Pep Guardiola’s side, now sitting in fourth place, will travel to Madrid on Wednesday needing a strong performance in the second leg to avoid exiting Europe.
“We showcased our identity and remembered what we hadn’t shown this season,” Guardiola stated.
“I’m very pleased with the pace and intensity. Marmoush was exceptional; he’s a player full of quality and speed.”
Newcastle remains in seventh place, three points behind the top four in the ongoing battle for Champions League qualification next season.
Nottingham Forest, currently third, suffered a setback with a 2-1 loss at Fulham, thanks to Calvin Bassey’s header in the 62nd minute.
