Just one week after Sweden’s triumphant victory over Poland that secured their spot in the World Cup, one of the team’s standout players, Gustav Lundgren, has been sidelined from the event in North America due to injury.
Lundgren, who made his second appearance for Sweden by coming on for the final 10 minutes, suffered an injury during the warm-up on Monday ahead of GAIS’ opening match of the Allsvenskan season against Djurgarden, and did not participate in the subsequent 1-0 defeat at home.
Pre-match reports from Gamla Ullevi raised concerns, as the 30-year-old was seen limping off the field, supported by two members of GAIS’ medical team.
It has now been confirmed that the winger has ruptured his Achilles tendon, ruling him out of the World Cup and possibly sidelining him for the entire 2026 Allsvenskan season.
Lundgren spoke with Swedish television after the match, still grappling with the reality of his injury.
“I’m a bit in shock. I just intended to step back and make a quick explosive move when I felt something go,” he revealed.
Sweden’s coach, Graham Potter, now faces the challenge of finding a replacement for a player who played a crucial role in the Swedes’ success; Lundgren was integral in the sequence of play that led to Viktor Gyokeres’ decisive goal.
“Naturally, you wish circumstances were different. When you have so much to look forward to and a chance to experience a World Cup, it would have been a fantastic opportunity,” Lundgren reflected.
