Marketa Vondrousova, the former Wimbledon champion, has opened up about her struggles with mental health, disclosing that she experienced an Acute Stress Reaction following an incident during a doping control check.
The Czech tennis star, who claimed the Wimbledon title in 2023, explained that the incident in December was triggered as she had “reached a breaking point after enduring months of emotional and physical strain.”
Vondrousova described the encounter as a “serious intrusion” when a doping control officer unexpectedly arrived at her home, demanding an immediate test.
“It’s quite difficult for me to discuss, but I want to be open about my mental health,” the 26-year-old shared on Instagram.
“For a significant period, I have been battling injuries, the relentless pressure of competition, and persistent sleep issues, which have left me feeling utterly drained and vulnerable.
“It gradually took its toll more than I genuinely recognised at the time.
“Years of receiving hateful messages and threats have influenced how secure I feel in my personal space.
“When someone knocked at my door late at night without properly identifying themselves or following the appropriate protocol, I reacted as someone who felt threatened.
“In that moment, it was more about feeling safe than evading anything.”
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) acknowledged Vondrousova’s comments and confirmed that she is not currently serving a mandatory provisional suspension.

The agency stated, “We can confirm that an investigation is underway, and the player has been charged with refusing a test.” They further noted, “At this point, we are unable to provide additional details regarding the specifics.”
Since the Adelaide International in January, Vondrousova has not competed in any tournaments and withdrew from the Australian Open due to a shoulder injury.
She is listed as an entrant for the upcoming Madrid Open set to begin on Tuesday.
Vondrousova disclosed that specialists have diagnosed her with an Acute Stress Reaction along with Generalised Anxiety Disorder.
“In that moment, fear clouded my judgement, and I couldn’t process the situation logically,” she explained.
She also referred to fellow Czech player Petra Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion, who endured severe injuries to her left hand following an incident with a knife-wielding intruder at her residence.
“After what happened to Petra, we no longer take strangers at our door lightly,” Vondrousova added.
“I’m striving to gradually find my way back, both on and off the court… I’m still working to clear my name, but I also need to prioritise my well-being.”
