Western United’s goalkeeper Matt Sutton has been granted a contract extension following his impressive “breakout season” in the Isuzu UTE A-League.
Sutton has put pen to paper on a new two-year agreement after solidifying his status as Western’s primary shot-stopper for the 2024-25 season.
The 24-year-old has been a key figure, starting all 14 matches for Western this season, as the Green and Black currently hold the fourth position in the league table ahead of their upcoming clash with the Macarthur Bulls.
“I’m truly excited to be continuing with the club. It feels great to string together some solid performances this season alongside the team,” Sutton remarked, having seized his first chance for consistent first-team action.
“Seeing the fans here in Tarneit leaving with smiles on their faces – that’s what it’s all about. I’m really thrilled, and I hope we can keep the good times rolling.”
“We’re constructing something really special. The future appears very promising, and that’s why I’m so pleased to be staying here for another two years.”

Sutton made the move to Western United from arch-rivals Melbourne City in 2023.
This contract extension comes shortly after 18-year-old Alex Nassiep signed his first professional contract with the club.
“Since joining us at the start of last season, Matt has embraced our club’s culture and values, working diligently to secure his chances,” said Mal Impiombato, Western’s general manager of football.
“It has been incredibly rewarding to witness his success this season, given the dedication he has shown to his profession and to the club.”
“His contributions on the pitch have been just as significant as his influence off it within the squad, and we have every confidence that his positive impact will continue to flourish in the years ahead.”
