Sydney FC staged a thrilling resurgence in a pulsating Sydney Derby, battling back from a two-goal deficit to secure a 3-3 draw against Western Sydney Wanderers with an equaliser in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
The Wanderers seemed set for their first derby triumph since November 2023, buoyed by Zac Sapsford’s brace that made him the club’s top scorer in this intense rivalry. However, Anthony Caceres’ incredible 97th-minute leveller capped an extraordinary comeback at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.
With the score at 3-1 in favour of the Wanderers at the 88th minute, super-sub Adrian Segecic ignited Sydney’s hopes just before the end. As the Sky Blues launched a relentless onslaught, the Wanderers faltered, allowing Caceres to bundle the ball into the net amidst chaotic celebrations.
Network 10 commentator Simon Hill labelled them “the great comeback kings of the A-League,” while his co-commentator Andy Harper described the moment as “spine-tingling”.
This result propels Sydney to third in the league standings, while the eighth-placed Wanderers find themselves two points adrift of the top six.
Heading into the match, Sydney aimed for a fifth consecutive derby victory and a historic clean sweep over their city rivals for the 2024-25 season. In contrast, the Wanderers were looking for their first win since November 2023, missing their star Spanish player, Juan Mata, due to injury.

The derby kicked off with a bang as both teams exchanged goals within the first eight minutes.
After the Wanderers came close to opening their account through Kraev, a moment of brilliance from Caceres set up Klimala, who scored in the seventh minute.
Caceres executed a stunning outside-of-the-boot pass that released Klimala, whose incisive run allowed him to seize the opportunity, celebrating in front of the Wanderers supporters.
However, Sydney’s lead was short-lived. Sapsford capitalised after Sky Blues goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares could only parry the ball right into the path of the Wanderers forward.
This immediate response reignited the contest, and the Wanderers looked threatening throughout the first half.

Western Sydney claimed the lead six minutes before half-time. Following an exhilarating counter-attack, the ball ended up in the net, but initially offside was called against Milanovic, who insisted he was onside. After a protracted review, replays confirmed that Milanovic was indeed onside and the goal stood, later credited as an own goal by Rhyan Grant.
The Wanderers’ lead grew just two minutes into the second half when Sapsford scored his second. A clever reverse pass from Brandon Borrello found Sapsford, and despite an initial offside call, he was deemed onside as he celebrated joyfully.
With this goal, Sapsford edged closer to the all-time derby goalscoring record held by Sydney FC legend Alex Brosque.
Sapsford nearly completed his hat-trick in the 58th minute, coming agonisingly close as his efforts were cleared off the line twice.
As Sydney pushed to claw back the deficit with Douglas Costa instrumental in their efforts, Segecic almost found the net late on, but Lawrence Thomas made a stunning save to deny him.
Segecic eventually scored in the 88th minute, setting the stage for a thrilling finish, culminating in Caceres’ dramatic late equaliser.
