Mamelodi Sundowns put an end to their four-match winless streak away from home in the CAF Champions League, securing a 1-0 victory against Esperance in an intense semi-final first leg held in Rades on Sunday evening.
This result opens the door for The Brazilians to reach their second consecutive Champions League final, although they will need to put in significant effort for the second leg in Pretoria on Saturday.
Here are the key highlights from the match.
Outstanding goal
The crucial moment arrived in the 51st minute, courtesy of Colombian Brayan Leon, who netted with a precise close-range header.
It was a brilliantly orchestrated goal, initiated by Jayden Adams’ long ball to the right wing, which Thapelo Morena volleyed into the six-yard box, allowing Leon to slip between two defenders and score.
Since his January transfer, Leon has proven to be an exceptional acquisition, marking his ninth goal with Sundowns, four of which have come in the Champions League. With 10 starts out of 18 appearances, his scoring rate is quite impressive.
Missed opportunities
Arthur Sales has squandered several chances in recent matches, and once again found himself in a prime shooting position but delayed too long in releasing his shot, which was ultimately blocked.
While he is undoubtedly a talented player, he appears to be lacking confidence at the moment. If Sundowns can reignite his form, they could pose a significantly greater threat.
Since scoring in the Champions League against Al-Hilal in January, Sales has yet to find the back of the net for Sundowns and has just five goals across all competitions this season, a tally that falls short for a player of his calibre.
Esperance’s Florian Danho nearly equalised with a powerful volley that struck the crossbar and later missed a headed chance, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by the Tunisians.

Disallowed goal
Esperance believed they had levelled the score with a goal from Aboubacar Diakite, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened to highlight a foul on goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, which had initially gone unnoticed.
During a scramble for the ball, defender Hamza Jelassi elbowed Williams in the face, allowing Onuche Ogbelu to cross for Diakite to score with a header. At first, it appeared that Sales had fouled his own goalkeeper, but after reviewing the incident on the touchline monitor, referee Mustapha Ghorbal confirmed the foul on Williams, thus cancelling Diakite’s goal.
Williams might have been better off punching the cross away rather than attempting to catch it, which turned out to be a fortunate escape.

Impressive Mudau
Right-back Khuliso Mudau made two crucial interventions in the first half, demonstrating exactly why Esperance had sought to sign him at the start of the season.
Mudau missed the early part of the campaign while trying to secure a transfer, only to return to Sundowns and fit back in as the team held firm.
A notable tackle came from Grant Kekana, who will be hoping that Hugo Broos took notice, potentially paving the way for a return to the Bafana Bafana squad.
Unfortunately, Kekana’s game ended prematurely due to a questionable red card for a high boot, where many felt a yellow card would have sufficed.
Potential final opponents
Should Sundowns manage to advance, they are likely to face Moroccan side FAR Rabat in the final.
FAR Rabat triumphed over newcomers Renaissance Berkane in their semi-final first leg, winning 2-0 thanks to second-half goals from Ahmed Hammoudan and substitute Khalid Ait Ouarkhane, setting up an intriguing return leg next Saturday in Berkane.
