For Everton supporters, the sole silver lining after witnessing Mohamed Salah net yet another goal in the Merseyside derby on Sunday is the knowledge that they won’t have to see the Egyptian donning their rivals’ red jersey again.
The 33-year-old winger, who has confirmed his departure from Anfield at the season’s conclusion, bid adieu to Liverpool’s local rivals in typical style, scoring the opener as his team claimed a 2-1 victory in the Premier League.
With this performance, Salah equalled Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard’s record for the most goals in Premier League Merseyside derbies with nine, before captain Virgil van Dijk sealed the win with a late strike.
“It feels fantastic,” Salah remarked to Sky Sports when asked about his goal in what would be his final derby. “The key was to assist the team in settling down and building their confidence. We anticipated a challenging encounter, and I’m pleased we managed to secure the win.”
Initially, Liverpool found themselves under pressure from an enthusiastic Everton side, but Salah coolly slotted home to give the visitors a lead in the 29th minute of the inaugural derby at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium.
“In the upcoming weeks, there will be plenty of praise to be shared about him, but he’s immensely valuable to us, both on and off the pitch,” said Van Dijk, reflecting on Salah.
“Appreciation for players often arises after they’re gone, yet we treasure him greatly. He’s an exceptional teammate, and we’ve experienced everything together, both the highs and lows. He will remain crucial for the remaining five matches we have left,” he added.
After scoring three goals in his last three Premier League appearances, Salah’s form has notably improved following a challenging season, though he insists there’s still more to come from him.
“I hope to continue scoring and help the team secure a place in the Champions League this season – ideally, I want to leave in the best way possible,” Salah expressed.
