Stuttgart maintained their unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga, extending it to seven matches (W5, D2), with an impressive 4-0 victory against Hamburger at MHPArena, propelling them into third place on the league table.
As expected, a confident Stuttgart took control of the match early on, with Deniz Undav sending their first attempt just over the bar from the edge of the area.
Hamburg’s Fabio Balde also aimed wide with a shot from a similar distance in their rare opportunity, but it wasn’t long before Stuttgart found the back of the net.
Jamie Leweling made a significant impact upon his return to the starting line-up, assisting Angelo Stiller, who coolly slotted the ball into the bottom corner with his first touch.
The Reds had previously triumphed in seven of their eight home encounters when scoring first in the league this season (D1), so there was a palpable sense of anticipation that they would secure a comfortable win.
Hamburg’s best opportunity in the first half fell to Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer, whose threatening shot was expertly parried away by Alexander Nubel.
However, Stuttgart quickly doubled their lead, with Ermedin Demirovic setting up Chris Fuhrich, who dispatched another precise finish into the bottom corner.
Demirovic nearly extinguished any hope for Hamburg before half-time with a dazzling solo run, but his effort went just past the wrong side of the post. While Stuttgart continued to push for more goals, the words in the Hamburg dressing room at the break were likely pointed.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes was called into action, making two spectacular saves in quick succession, first stopping a close-range effort from Maximilian Mittelstadt and then a powerful attempt from Undav from outside the box.
The hosts almost faced consequences for their failure to secure the game earlier when Rayan Philippe headed just over the bar, but they did find their third goal before the hour mark. Fuhrich turned provider again, setting up Mittelstadt, who neatly finished to the bottom corner.
Mittelstadt sought a quick second but was denied by a well-placed free-kick save from Fernandes, while Demirovic thought he had added a fifth with a brilliant finish that was ruled offside.
Undav had a golden opportunity to extend their lead from the penalty spot but surprisingly fired over the crossbar.
Bilal El Khannouss, however, found his composure and added the fourth with a deflected shot from just outside the area after receiving a pass from Tiago Tomas.
Stuttgart proved too strong on home turf once more, having now clinched victory in six of their last seven encounters at the MHP Arena, with no losses recorded.
