South Sydney Rabbitohs legend Nathan Merritt has provided a poignant health update, weeks following a devastating double diagnosis of stage-four cancer.
The former player, who proudly donned the red and green for 218 matches across a 237-game NRL career, was present to sound the club’s Legacy Bell during the traditional Good Friday clash against the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium.
Now 42, Merritt feels he may have less than a year left to live. Invited to the match by the Rabbitohs, he believes this could very well be his final NRL game attendance.
In a candid moment with Brad Fittler on Channel Nine’s broadcast, Merritt expressed that he is “just doing his best”. He was joined by 20 friends and family members in a corporate box for the event.
“I’m feeling pretty unwell at the moment… just taking things as they come and appreciating each day,” he shared.

“It’s a wonderful day for me. I’ve got my family and friends in the box, and it’s a great occasion to celebrate my time with Souths, and enjoy the moment,” he added.
The father of five revealed last month that he had been diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus and liver. While the diagnosis for oesophageal cancer came last November, the liver cancer was identified just recently. His children range from ages 11 to 21.
Since starting chemotherapy, Merritt has lost approximately 22 kilograms.
Reflecting on his most memorable Good Friday moment, Merritt recounted the thrilling 2013 encounter where his Rabbitohs clinched a 17-12 victory.

During a tightly contested match tied 6-6 in the second half, Merritt expertly received a perfect kick from Adam Reynolds to score in the corner and put his team ahead.
“It was a trick-shot try – Reyno kicked it from the sideline to me, and I scored in the corner. That moment stands out for me,” he recalled.
This wasn’t his final significant contribution in that match; he later provided a crucial offload to Bryson Goodwin, securing victory.
The Rabbitohs Foundation has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist Merritt and his family with ongoing medical expenses.
