Is Harrison Sawyer, the striker for Macarthur Bulls, the Peter Crouch of the Isuzu UTE A-League?
Just a week ago, A-League legend Daniel McBreen highlighted the parallels between the Bulls’ in-form forward and the Premier League’s cult icon—not just in terms of height.
Sawyer had endured a drought of 16 matches in the Isuzu UTE A-League without finding the net, but he broke that spell with a stunning brace against Newcastle Jets in Round 24. Following this breakthrough, a reinvigorated Sawyer added another goal during a decisive 5-1 win over Brisbane Roar on Friday night.

After his two-goal performance in the thrilling 3-3 draw with the Jets, McBreen compared Sawyer’s goal drought to that of Crouch when he first joined Liverpool in 2005.
“Peter Crouch went 17 games before netting his first goal for Liverpool, and then he became a legend at the club, remaining for many years and scoring numerous goals,” McBreen noted.
“Harry Sawyer is a significant presence on the field—he’s a formidable player and creates plenty of problems for defenders.”
This week, Sawyer has recorded three goals in his last two outings, and to celebrate his ongoing surge in form, he showcased Crouch’s signature robot celebration.
McBreen returned to the commentary booth for Macarthur’s 5-1 victory on Friday night, a match that concluded with Sawyer scoring in stoppage time. He was quick to highlight the Bulls striker’s tribute to Crouch after his third goal in two games.
“He may not be quite as tall as Peter Crouch, and I did mention last week that Crouch waited 17 games to score his first goal for Liverpool, going on to become a key figure at the club,” he said.
“Let’s hope Harry Sawyer can achieve something similar.”
Sawyer made his entry into the Isuzu UTE A-League during the 2016-17 season, playing five matches for the Newcastle Jets before taking a nearly eight-year break from the competition. He returned to the league with the Bulls in September 2024.
After 11 matches without a goal at the club, Sawyer is now finding his rhythm as Macarthur aims for a late charge to secure a place in the top six by the end of the season.
