Patrick Kisnorbo can appreciate the efforts of his goalkeeper after Sydney secured a 0-0 stalemate against Brisbane in his inaugural match at the helm.
Al Hassan Toure found the net on two separate occasions in the first half, yet both goals were disallowed by the linesman. Harrison Devenish-Meares earned the player of the match accolade thanks to a series of impressive saves that ensured Brisbane were kept at bay, while James McGarry will undoubtedly be disappointed after missing a golden opportunity in the dying seconds of stoppage time.
Brisbane now sits six points off the playoff spots and are virtually out of contention for the finals. Although a goalless draw may not mark the fairy tale beginning Kisnorbo envisioned, a point isn’t a disastrous outcome for Sydney FC, who find themselves seven points clear of seventh-place Central Coast. They will be eager to build on this result as the season heads towards its conclusion.
Al Hassan Toure provided the only flashes of excitement during a lacklustre first half. On two occasions within quick succession, Toure broke through Brisbane’s defensive line, and although he found the net both times, the linesman’s flag cut his celebrations short, leaving the scoreline at 0-0.
Devenish-Meares put in a commanding performance during the first half and continued to shine under pressure after the interval, notably diving to his right to thwart a powerful low shot from Jay O’Shea.
Justin Vidic was the first to create a genuine scoring chance with 25 minutes remaining, but he sent his attempt soaring high and wide.
Devenish-Meares came to the rescue yet again, making a spectacular diving save against a curling, dipping shot from James McGarry as the final whistle approached.
In the dying moments of the match, McGarry was presented with the perfect opportunity when Henry Hore managed to manoeuvre past his marker and squared the ball to him, but McGarry’s attempt went soaring well over the crossbar, leaving the match to finish at 0-0.
