Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has emphasised the need to channel the disappointment of two consecutive cup defeats into motivation as his squad prepares for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Sporting on Tuesday.
The Londoners touched down in Lisbon reeling from their first two losses of the season, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the League Cup final and being shocked by Championship outfit Southampton with a 2-1 result in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
“We need to maintain perspective on the challenges we’ve faced thus far,” Arteta remarked to the press on Monday. “Embrace the pain and leverage it for improvement.
“We are fully aware of what transpired and why it occurred. This is football.”
With Arsenal now competing in just two tournaments instead of four, Arteta underscored the necessity of remaining calm rather than succumbing to panic as his players aim to bounce back on the European stage.
“Clarity is essential; understanding the reasons behind our setbacks is vital,” he explained. “Once we grasp that, we need to improve, which is our focus.”
Unfortunately, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Jurrien Timber will miss the first leg due to injuries, with Arteta expressing optimism that they could return for the weekend fixtures.
On a positive note, Gabriel Magalhaes, Declan Rice, and Leandro Trossard are all fit and were seen participating in training.
Arsenal will be taking on a Sporting side that remains unbeaten at home in Europe this season, with the Portuguese champions eager to take an early advantage in the tie.
Sporting midfielder Maxi Araujo dismissed claims that Arsenal are the clear favourites on Tuesday.
“There are no clear favourites in this knockout stage,” he stated to the media. “They are performing well, and so are we.”
Sporting’s manager Rui Borges remarked that Arsenal’s recent defeats hold little significance.
“No, I don’t believe that’s a factor; top teams always strive to win,” Borges commented. “They will be even more focused and eager to showcase their collective and individual talents, which will likely pose more challenges for us.”
The second leg will take place on April 15th at the Emirates Stadium.
In the interim, Arsenal will turn their attention back to the Premier League title race, hosting Bournemouth on Saturday.
