Harry Kane, the striker for Bayern Munich, returned to training on Monday after overcoming an ankle injury, but coach Vincent Kompany will make a last-minute call on whether he will be available for the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid on Tuesday.
The England captain, aged 32, was sidelined during his nation’s 1-0 friendly loss to Japan last month and also missed Bayern’s 3-2 victory against Freiburg.
Kane’s anticipated return would be a significant advantage for Bayern, as the sharpshooter has netted 48 goals in 40 appearances this season across all competitions.
The six-time European champions will be desperate to have him fit ahead of their clash with a Real Madrid side that advanced to the quarter-finals following a commanding 5-1 aggregate victory over Manchester City.
“It was crucial that he got a substantial amount of training in today. I don’t believe he’s lost his touch. We’ll make a decision tomorrow,” Kompany told the media on Monday.
“Everyone is fit apart from (goalkeeper) Sven Ulreich. We possess a robust squad and are prepared for both legs.”
Bayern arrives in Madrid in outstanding form, holding a nine-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga, having only suffered one defeat in the Champions League group stage.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, are keen to bounce back after a 2-1 defeat in LaLiga to relegation-threatened Mallorca on Saturday.
“The key thing is that we maintain complete focus on tomorrow’s match. We aim to demonstrate our capabilities. We’ll put in our utmost effort to do that. My sole desire is for us to win without fear,” Kompany remarked.
The former Belgium and Manchester City centre-back recognised the formidable task ahead for his team but expressed confidence in Bayern’s readiness.
“Everything will be crucial tomorrow. While this is my first experience here as a coach, we have plenty of experience in matches of this intensity,” he stated.
“The outcome will depend partly on strategy, but predominantly on the finer details – such as the individual talents of the players. We’ve prepared for Real and are aware of what they did against City. It’s arguably the toughest away game one can encounter, but we aim to claim victory.”
