Michael Carrick has not dismissed the possibility of Marcus Rashford making a comeback to Manchester United once his loan stint with Barcelona concludes.
The England forward has been sidelined from United’s action since December 2024, having wrapped up the previous season on loan at Aston Villa before making the switch to Barcelona for the current term.
At 28, Rashford has had a commendable season with the LaLiga frontrunners, but it appears Barcelona are wavering on whether to trigger a reported £26.1 million option to secure his permanent transfer.
This uncertainty could cast a shadow over Rashford’s future, especially as he aims to represent England in the World Cup set to take place in North America next summer.
Rashford still has two years remaining on a lucrative contract, which is reportedly set for a 25 per cent salary increase next season should United secure qualification for the Champions League.
When questioned about the potential for Rashford’s return to Old Trafford, United’s interim manager Carrick remarked to journalists on Friday: “I believe there are decisions to be made over time regarding various matters, and naturally, Marcus is one of those scenarios.”
“However, at this moment, no definitive decisions have been made. They will be made eventually, as they must be, but for now, there’s nothing concrete to announce.”
Currently seated in third place, United can edge closer to clinching a spot in next season’s Champions League if they secure a victory against sixth-placed Chelsea on Saturday.
Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo may also return from injury at Stamford Bridge, having established himself as a pivotal player under Carrick.
Much like Rashford, the future of 20-year-old Mainoo looked precarious during the tenure of former United manager Ruben Amorim.
Defender Harry Maguire is another player who has seen a resurgence under Carrick, potentially providing Rashford with optimism about a return to his childhood club.
“From my point of view, I aim to work with whoever is here, helping them to improve and make the most of their abilities,” Carrick commented.
“For now, it’s about this current squad, and there are players out on loan, with whatever will unfold with that happening in due course.”
