Al Qadsiah forward Mateo Retegui will be sidelined for the remainder of the season following a leg fracture, as announced by the Saudi Pro League club on Friday. This setback poses a significant challenge to their aspirations of securing a spot in next season’s AFC Champions League Elite.
The Italy international, who has netted 11 goals in 28 appearances, sustained the injury after contributing both a goal and an assist during a 2-2 draw against Al Shabab on Tuesday.
“Medical assessments have confirmed that Mateo Retegui has suffered a distal tibial fracture,” Al Qadsiah communicated on X.
“He is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming days and will be unavailable for the remainder of the season,” the club further stated.
At 26 years of age, Retegui, originally from Argentina, has scored 16 goals in 28 SPL matches this season. He was part of the Italy national team that faced defeat against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 2026 World Cup playoff final last month.
Brenden Rogers’s team, Al Qadsiah, currently sits fourth in the standings with 62 points from 29 matches, trailing Al Ahly by four points, although Al Ahly has a game in hand. The top three teams will secure qualification for next season’s Champions League Elite.
