Al Qadsiah forward Mateo Retegui will be sidelined for the remainder of the season following a leg fracture, as confirmed by the Saudi Pro League club on Friday. This setback poses a significant challenge to their aspirations for qualification for next season’s AFC Champions League Elite.
The Italian international, who has netted 11 goals in 28 appearances, suffered the injury after scoring and assisting in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Al Shabab on Tuesday.
“Medical assessments have revealed that Mateo Retegui has a distal tibial fracture,” Al Qadsiah announced on X.
“He is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming days and will be unavailable for the rest of the season,” the club further stated.
The 26-year-old Retegui, originally from Argentina, has found the back of the net 16 times in 28 SPL matches this season. He also featured in the Italy national team that was defeated by Bosnia and Herzegovina in last month’s playoff final for the 2026 World Cup.
Brenden Rogers’s Al Qadsiah currently sits fourth in the league with 62 points from 29 matches, trailing Al Ahly by four points, although Al Ahly has a game in hand. The top three teams will earn a spot in next season’s Champions League Elite.
