Michael Carrick has not dismissed the idea of Marcus Rashford making a return to Manchester United once his loan agreement with Barcelona concludes.
Rashford, the England international, hasn’t featured for United since December 2024, finishing last season on loan at Aston Villa before heading to Barcelona for the current term.
The 28-year-old forward has had a respectable season with the LaLiga front-runners; however, Barcelona appear to be uncertain about triggering a reported £26.1 million option to sign him permanently.
This uncertainty could place Rashford’s future in a precarious position as he looks forward to a summer where he aims to represent England at the World Cup in North America.
Rashford is still tied to a lucrative contract that has two years remaining and could see a reported 25 per cent pay rise if United secures a spot in the Champions League next season.
When quizzed about the possibility of Rashford returning to Old Trafford, interim manager Carrick remarked to reporters on Friday: “I think there are decisions that need to be made over time regarding certain players, and Marcus is part of that conversation.”
“As of now, nothing has been finalised. There will be decisions to make, as it’s inevitable, but at this point, there’s nothing concrete to share.”
Currently sitting in third place, United can inch closer to securing a place in next season’s Champions League with a victory against sixth-placed Chelsea on Saturday.
Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo may also return from injury at Stamford Bridge, having established himself as an essential player under Carrick’s management.
Much like Rashford, the 20-year-old Mainoo’s future seemed uncertain under the previous United manager, Ruben Amorim.
Additionally, defender Harry Maguire has experienced a resurgence under Carrick, which could provide Rashford with optimism regarding a future return to his childhood club.
“From my viewpoint, I want to work with whoever is here, optimising their potential and assisting in their improvement,” Carrick stated.
“Right now, our focus is on this squad of players, and we’ll see how things pan out for those on loan later down the track.”
