Frank Lampard has responded to his critics by steering Coventry back into the Premier League for the first time in 25 years, orchestrating a promotion-winning season that has revitalised the former Chelsea star’s managerial status.
Lampard’s side secured promotion on Friday with a 1-1 draw against Blackburn, igniting jubilant celebrations from the Sky Blues manager, his players, and 7,500 Coventry supporters at Ewood Park.
The occasion held deep significance for Lampard and the club after both had endured challenging periods away from the spotlight.
The sense of redemption was palpable for Lampard, who was seen wiping away tears of joy as the final whistle blew.
“Throughout my career, I’ve always had a point to prove, to be honest. It’s something that’s been inside me since I was a young player. You’re always fighting against something,” he remarked, addressing his critics.
The conclusion of Coventry’s 34-year absence from the Premier League began with an unfortunate decline after their exit in 2001.
The 1987 FA Cup victors plummeted to the fourth tier in 2017 and endured a three-year period of playing away from home during a legal dispute regarding their stadium.
Thanks to Lampard, they’re now back in England’s top tier, transforming the meaning of being “sent to Coventry,” a phrase typically implying to ignore someone, into a far more enjoyable experience.
At 47 years of age, Lampard’s appointment in November 2024 was seen as a gamble for Coventry, given the ups and downs of his managerial career thus far.
Initially met with skepticism from Coventry fans, club owner Doug King believed that Lampard possessed the necessary experience and character to rejuvenate a team in need of a new direction after the dismissal of long-serving manager Mark Robins.
“Frank has experience in the Championship and understands what it takes to succeed in this league,” King stated.
King’s intuition has paid off handsomely, with Coventry’s promotion clinching an estimated £200 million influx in revenue.
The journey back to Premier League prosperity was fraught with challenges for Coventry, mirroring Lampard’s own rocky ride back to prominence.
Lampard’s playing days at Chelsea saw him achieve unprecedented success, securing 11 major trophies and netting a club record 211 goals.
His managerial career, however, has been more challenging until this point.
In his first year as manager in 2019, he faced heartbreak with Derby after losing in the Championship play-off final.
‘I strive to remain genuine’
Lampard returned to Chelsea that summer, earning praise for developing young talents like Reece James, Tammy Abraham, and Mason Mount despite a transfer embargo.
Chelsea finished fourth in Lampard’s debut season, yet he was dismissed in 2021 after not securing silverware.
He took over at Everton, leading the club to avoid relegation in 2022, yet was unable to stave off the axe after less than a year at the helm.
His interim return to Chelsea in 2023 saw him lose eight of the 11 matches he managed.
His attempt to restore his reputation at Coventry began when the team was just two points above the relegation zone upon his arrival at the CBS Arena.
Importantly, the wisdom of his managerial mentors resonated more deeply with Lampard as he sought avenues for growth.
“Working with Jose Mourinho was a remarkable experience. He was very hands-on and emotional, tactically astute, and adept at managing the group. Carlo Ancelotti was calm and composed,” Lampard shared with Sky Sports recently.
“I see myself as somewhere in the middle. I also reflect on the aspects I found challenging and learn from them. I strive to remain genuine.”
Less emotionally charged and more open to delegation than in his earlier managerial stints, Lampard has galvanised a rapid turnaround that saw Coventry reach the play-off semi-finals last season.
Intent on rectifying that near miss, Coventry has showcased exceptional performance in the Championship this season.
This success stands as a testament to Lampard’s bold decision to stake his career on Coventry.
“When we arrived 15 months ago in a people carrier, we were stepping into the unknown,” he recalled.
“We’ve developed a deep affection for this place, and this achievement ranks high among my accomplishments. I’m immensely proud to be the manager.”
