Round 25’s Standout Performers
The six clubs that secured their positions in the A-League finals with a week left of the regular season certainly stood out.
Most were already assured of a top-six finish heading into Round 25, but Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory in particular needed to secure points to keep a resurgent Wellington Phoenix at bay, and they both delivered.
Melbourne City shone with their attacking prowess, netting three goals away from home to celebrate their fourth consecutive victory. This win has evidently made the post-Champions League period easier for them, both physically and mentally.
Aurelio Vidmar highlighted this after the match, stating that the squad has “found an extra gear,” not merely due to a lighter schedule, except for their three matches in eight days last week, but also from the urgency that comes with needing to secure victories.
This strong mentality should bolster them as they approach the critical phase of the season.
On loan Marcus Younis has exceeded expectations in the attacking third, prompting some to suggest he be considered for the Socceroos’ World Cup preparations.
The Major Setbacks of Round 25
Macarthur FC had a fleeting moment where they controlled their destiny but faltered defensively as the weight of contending for a place in the AFC Champions League’s knockout stages proved overwhelming.
In contrast to Vidmar’s City, Sterjovski’s Bulls could not regroup effectively after their continental exit, struggling with defensive lapses and managing just one clean sheet across their last fourteen matches while losing six of their last eight outings.
While they exhibited determination in their victories against top-two contenders Newcastle and Auckland, subsequent losses of 3-1 to both Perth and Adelaide confirmed they weren’t yet ready to compete at the elite level during the season’s climax.
Key players who drove their early season form, including Harry Sawyer and Luke Vickery, couldn’t maintain their performance levels throughout the latter half, directly corresponding with the team’s decline in results.
Mitch Duke’s mid-season signing was expected to provide the much-needed spark in attack and leadership, but he often found himself lacking support.
It wouldn’t be surprising if management reconsidered Mile Sterjovski’s position come the season’s end.

Comments from the Managers
Michael Valkanis (Brisbane Roar):
“You could replay the same press conference from every match. It’s a game we should have won. At half-time, we were in a good position regarding nullifying them and capitalising on our chances. Towards the end, we witnessed our future with the young players we introduced. Their energy, effort, determination, and fearlessness to attack were refreshing. We need to be more clinical with our opportunities – that’s been our narrative this season. Unfortunately, the football gods aren’t shining on us at the moment.”
Warren Moon (Central Coast Mariners):
“There was much talk before the game about doing a service to Auckland and helping them win the plate instead of Newcastle. I found that rather disrespectful to what our team has achieved this season. We approached every game with the goal to win, and I think it’s overlooked that the Mariners have won more trophies than Auckland and the Newcastle Jets combined in A-League history. While we’re disappointed not to reach the finals, our motivation to perform remains intact.”
Danny Hay (Auckland FC):
“Steve Corica wasn’t on the bench today because we are deeply frustrated with some of the decision-making quality we’ve encountered. A player who should have received a red card ended up making significant saves and interceptions. If he hadn’t been there, I would bet we would have secured a victory. In a different reality, we could be discussing an Auckland player being sent off for unacceptable behaviour.”
