Liam Rosenior has condemned Chelsea’s “unacceptable” 3-0 defeat to Brighton, with the frustrated Blues manager accusing his players of showing a lack of “desire, spirit, and courage.”
Rosenior’s team was thoroughly outplayed at the Amex Stadium on Tuesday, with goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood, and Danny Welbeck decimating their hopes of Champions League qualification.
This defeat marks the first time Chelsea have suffered five consecutive league losses without finding the net since 1912.
With seven defeats in their last eight matches across all competitions, Chelsea have managed only one win in their last nine league outings.
Currently sitting in seventh place, the Blues are trailing fifth-placed Liverpool by seven points in their quest for a top-five finish that guarantees a Champions League spot.
In the aftermath of the match, Rosenior faced chants from disgruntled Chelsea supporters calling for his dismissal, but he placed the blame firmly on his squad in a remarkable post-match rant.
“I have stood up for the players in the past when it was warranted, but I cannot defend that performance. It does not reflect this football club, nor does it align with what I expect from the group, and that must change,” he asserted.
“I feel a numbness from my anger. I always speak about what I witness, and that display was unacceptable. The goals we conceded were intolerable, and I must take responsibility for that.
“This wasn’t a matter of tactics. It was about desire, spirit, and courage, which I did not see enough of.”
“We were nowhere near good enough, and we must improve on that.”
Rosenior’s team is at risk of missing out on European football altogether unless they can reverse their dismal form.
They will face Leeds in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday, and a loss at Wembley could push Rosenior closer to the exit door just months after he took over from Enzo Maresca in January.
‘Nowhere near the levels’
When asked how he intends to turn Chelsea’s fortunes around, Rosenior responded: “I have my own strategies; I am not here to make excuses. What transpired was unacceptable from everyone, including myself, and that has to change.”
“We were nowhere near the required levels. We lacked tackles, duels, intensity, spirit, energy, and passion, and that led to our defeat.”
“I will analyse the team, assess individuals, and identify a group I can trust to execute the fundamentals of our game.”
“It’s something we must adjust to very quickly. Accountability is key.”
This week, Rosenior noted that Chelsea’s owners have been “magnificent” in their support through this concerning slump.
Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali expressed optimism about long-term success under Rosenior’s leadership.
However, the atmosphere surrounding Chelsea is becoming increasingly toxic.
Blues defender Trevoh Chalobah added to the sense of discord by providing a markedly different perspective on the team’s work ethic than Rosenior.
“I personally thought the lads were giving it their all. Everyone in the dressing room felt exhausted. It’s not a matter of effort; we did our best, but we were simply beaten,” he said.
“We worked hard today. You can discuss stats, but I can see that everyone is fatigued.”
Expressing that Chelsea’s players share the same frustration as Rosenior and the fans, Chalobah emphasised: “As players, we must be accountable for our performances.
“We understand how much support the fans have shown us, and we recognise their disappointment with the results.
“We need to maintain a positive mindset. Dwelling on negativity won’t help us. Being pessimistic and fixating on the past won’t improve the situation.”
