On Sunday, Tottenham Hotspur denounced the “vile, dehumanising racism” directed at defender Kevin Danso on social media. This response followed an error that allowed Brighton & Hove Albion to secure a late equaliser, leaving the Premier League team firmly in the relegation zone.
Brighton’s goal came in the final moments of the match after the 27-year-old Austrian international was shoved off the ball, enabling Georginio Rutter to level the scores at 2-2.
Still in search of their first league victory of 2026, Spurs currently sit in 18th place with just five matches left this season.
“Kevin Danso has been, and continues to be, subjected to appalling and significant racist abuse on social media,” the club stated, highlighting the ongoing issue of racism that remains distressingly prevalent in European football.
“We have witnessed and reported vile, dehumanising racism, a behaviour that is undoubtedly a criminal act. Such actions will not be tolerated.”
The club has made it clear that they are escalating the matter to the Metropolitan Police in London, along with other relevant authorities and social media platforms. UK law enforcement is adopting a tougher stance against individuals convicted of racism, implementing arrests and bans, yet challenges persist in eradicating the issue.
“We will advocate for the strictest possible penalties against everyone we can identify,” Spurs added.
“Kevin has our unwavering support as both a player and an individual. Everyone at this club stands together against such behaviour.”
“No aspect of form or league standings can ever justify or rationalise racist abuse.”
Danso expressed his awareness of the hateful comments aimed at him during a weekend when the Premier League was championing its “No Room For Racism” initiative.
“Racist abuse has no place in this sport or in society. However, it does not define me, and it will not divert my focus from what truly matters. I know who I am, what I stand for, and the reasons behind my commitment to play,” he wrote on Instagram.
“Now, it’s about maintaining my focus, working harder, and returning stronger for the upcoming matches.”
