Aston Villa, the frontrunners in the UEFA Europa League (UEL), made a crucial advancement towards the semi-finals after securing a 3-1 victory against Bologna in their away leg, thus ending the Italian side’s impressive run of 20 consecutive home games without defeat in the competition.
In their third consecutive European quarter-final, Villa faced a challenging start against Bologna, gradually finding their rhythm in the match.
After a quiet opening, the home team began to assert themselves, with Jonathan Rowe playing a pivotal role in their attack.
The winger almost gave his side the lead in the 26th minute, driving forward and setting up Santiago Castro, whose deflected effort seemed destined to nestle in the net after looping over Emiliano Martinez. However, the goal was disallowed following a VAR check for offside.
Undeterred, Rowe then delivered an exquisite cross with the outside of his boot to captain Lewis Ferguson, whose header struck the underside of the bar in a heart-stopping moment for Villa’s defence.
The Villans heeded the warning and began to assert their own threat, as John McGinn came close with a shot that skimmed just past the near post.
Just before half-time, goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia, standing in for the injured Lukasz Skorupski, miscalculated a corner from Youri Tielemans, allowing Ezri Konsa to nod in his first goal of the season into an unguarded net.
This goal opened the floodgates for Villa, who quickly capitalised on another error early in the second half when Emiliano Buendia pressured Torbjorn Lysaker Heggem into a mistake in his own half, enabling Ollie Watkins to slide the ball home through Ravaglia’s legs.
With Bologna’s initial dominance fading, the Premier League side took control of the match and looked the more likely to find a third goal.
A late flurry from the hosts saw them reduce the deficit, as Rowe converted with a clever turn and a well-placed shot that sailed past Martinez.
However, a corner in stoppage time saw Watkins restore the two-goal cushion with a header, leaving Bologna with a hefty challenge ahead in the second leg back in England, as their impressive 11-match unbeaten run in the UEL came to a halt (W7, D4).
For Villa, this victory marked their eighth consecutive win in the UEL under Unai Emery, as they also claimed four victories from their last five matches across all competitions, looking to build momentum at this critical stage of the season.
