Crystal Palace delivered an impressive performance to secure a 3-0 victory in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League quarter-final clash against Fiorentina, marking the fourth consecutive match La Viola have failed to win against English teams.
Both sides began the match with an attacking mindset, eager to seize an early lead during such a crucial encounter. However, the goalkeepers were not heavily challenged initially; Chris Richards thwarted an effort from Roberto Piccoli, while Jean-Philippe Mateta directed a header off-target.
Robin Gosens had a significant opportunity when Giovanni Fabbian weaved his way into the box and set him up, but the German was unable to regain control to convert the chance.
Evann Guessand, on the other hand, had less time to compose himself as Daniel Munoz delivered a sharp ball into the box, leading to Guessand’s instinctive shot rolling just wide of the post.
Though he missed the target again shortly after, Guessand drew a foul from Dodo, resulting in a penalty and a yellow card, which means La Viola will be without their right-back for the second leg.

Despite not finding the back of the net since January 25, Mateta confidently stepped up and successfully converted the penalty, sending David de Gea the wrong way in the 24th minute.
Just seven minutes later, Mateta was thwarted by a fantastic save from De Gea, but Tyrick Mitchell seized the loose ball and smashed it past Marin Pongracic, hitting the post on the way in.
Before the half-time whistle, Jaydee Canvot had a shot parried away, while Maxence Lacroix’s attempt sailed wide.
As the break approached, the hosts continued to apply the pressure but had a close call shortly after the restart when Fabbian struck the ball against Dean Henderson after a cutback from Dodo.
Daichi Kamada almost found the net, hitting the side netting, yet the visitors seemed to rally, with Albert Gudmundsson and Piccoli forcing saves from Henderson moments apart as the hour mark neared.
Guessand’s exit due to injury was a setback for the hosts, but they continued to maintain their lead and nearly added to their tally, with Ismaila Sarr and Mateta both sending headers off target.
However, Sarr made no mistake from Kamada’s cross in the 91st minute, nodding the ball down into the corner of the net, solidifying Palace’s aggregate lead.
This pivotal goal could have significant implications for the tie, and it capped off a positive night for Palace, extending their unbeaten streak to five matches—marking their first win in 90 minutes in four games—putting them in a strong position ahead of the second leg in Florence.
On the other hand, this marks Fiorentina’s first defeat in seven matches across all competitions, leaving them with a tough task ahead to stave off further disappointment in the UECL.
