Danish Defender Who “Neutralised” Ronaldo Calls Time on International Career

In an interview with Danish publication Politiken, the seasoned defender reflected on his choice, indicating that he has recently given it considerable thought.

“I’ve always aimed to step away at the right moment, and for me, that moment is now,” Vestergaard stated.

Brian Riemer, the head coach of the Danish national team, commended Vestergaard for his strong character and personality. He also emphasised the defender’s “clear and dependable” skills on the pitch.

Riemer considers the 2021 European Championship, in which Denmark advanced to the semi-finals, a significant highlight in Vestergaard’s international career. He also fondly recalls Denmark’s victory against Portugal in the 2025 Nations League.

He noted that Vestergaard effectively neutralised superstar Cristiano Ronaldo during the 1-0 win at Parken Stadium in the Nations League.

He “completely erased” Ronaldo that day, Riemer asserted.

Following a groin operation, Vestergaard was sidelined for Denmark’s two crucial playoff matches aimed at securing a spot in this summer’s World Cup earlier in March.

Denmark lost the pivotal match against the Czech Republic, prompting Vestergaard to decide on his retirement with two years remaining until EURO 2028.

He acknowledged to Politiken that he no longer envisions himself as part of the new project, which features several emerging talents.

During the autumn, Vestergaard was involved in the two disappointing World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Scotland, where Denmark had a chance to clinch a spot in the World Cup finals.

The Leicester defender regards his time with the national team as the greatest privilege and most significant achievement of his career since debuting in 2013.

Having joined Leicester City in 2021, Vestergaard has made a total of 59 appearances for the Danish national team.
