Aston Villa, the top contenders for the UEFA Europa League (UEL), made significant progress towards the semi-finals with a 3-1 victory against Bologna in their away leg, ending the hosts’ impressive 20-match unbeaten home run in the tournament.
In their third consecutive European quarter-final, Villa faced a challenging match in Bologna, gradually finding their rhythm throughout the game.
After a subdued opening phase, Bologna began to build momentum, with Jonathan Rowe playing a pivotal role in their offensive efforts.
The winger seemed to give his team the lead in the 26th minute by setting up Santiago Castro, whose deflected shot looped over Emiliano Martinez and appeared to cross the line, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside.

Unfazed, Rowe continued to be a threat and delivered a brilliant cross with the outside of his boot to captain Lewis Ferguson, whose attempt was denied as it struck the underside of the crossbar.
Villa began to wake up to the threats posed by their opponents, as John McGinn came close with a shot that narrowly missed the near post.
As half-time approached, Federico Ravaglia, filling in for the injured Lukasz Skorupski, misjudged a corner from Youri Tielemans. This mistake allowed Ezri Konsa to score his first goal of the season by nodding into an empty net.
Befteor settled into the match, and shortly after the interval, Emiliano Buendia’s pressing resulted in Torbjorn Lysaker Heggem losing possession in his defensive third. Ollie Watkins capitalised with a composed finish through Ravaglia’s legs.
With Bologna’s early dominance fading, the Premier League side steadily took charge of the match, often looking more likely to score the next goal.
Despite a late push from the hosts, Rowe deservedly found the net with a clever move inside and a well-placed shot beyond Martinez’s reach, reducing the deficit to one goal.
However, in stoppage time, Watkins headed in from a corner to restore Villa’s two-goal advantage, leaving Bologna with a significant challenge ahead in the second leg back in England. This defeat also marked the end of their impressive 11-match unbeaten streak in the UEL (W7, D4).
For Aston Villa, this triumph marks their eighth consecutive victory in the UEL under Unai Emery, who has steered the team to four wins in their last five matches in all competitions, as they aim to maintain the positive momentum at this crucial stage of the season.
