Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed that Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Fulham in the Premier League has lifted spirits after a challenging sequence of defeats, but he cautioned that this is merely the first step as they approach a pivotal week in their season.
Seventeen-year-old Rio Ngumoha netted a stunning opener, quickly followed by a goal from Mohamed Salah, securing Liverpool’s place in fifth position. Slot is optimistic that this triumph can generate some much-needed momentum as they prepare for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
Having not won a league match since late February and coming off heavy defeats—including a 4-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals and a 2-0 setback at PSG—the team needed this victory.
While recognising the improved atmosphere within the squad, Slot maintained a level of caution.
“It’s a better place than it was two or three days ago or a week ago, but a win doesn’t mean everything is fixed,” he remarked.
The Dutch manager commended the fans for creating a vibrant atmosphere during Saturday’s match and urged them to maintain that energy when Liverpool faces PSG at Anfield next week.
“This was an important victory not just for the league but looking ahead to Tuesday, for both the players and the supporters. After suffering a 4-0 defeat and a 2-0 loss, everyone needed this win,” Slot shared with the BBC.
“One thing is certain: on Tuesday, we need our fans. We had supporters in Paris, but we struggled greatly.
“Anfield has proven time and again that it can elevate the team to new heights, and we need that once more. Thirty minutes before kickoff, the players need that support to feel it’s going to be another memorable night.”
Ngumoha, at just 17, made history as the youngest Liverpool player to score in the Premier League at Anfield, sparking discussions among fans on social media about whether the teenager might start against PSG.
Slot praised Ngumoha’s landmark goal, underscoring the teenager’s increasing impact.
“One of his strengths is his ability to excel in one-on-one situations,” Slot said. “We’ve seen this season that as he gets more playing time … it’s well deserved.
“Whenever he plays, he performs exceptionally well, and today he scored, which is crucial in football. Goals carry tremendous weight.”
Salah’s goal in his first game at Anfield since announcing his decision to leave the club at the season’s end resonated with the fans, who chanted his name in support.
“It’s significant for Mo that he found the net, but more importantly, it was essential for the team and the club to secure this victory,” Slot commented.
“For Mo to score in a manner we’ve seen him execute countless times—with his inside foot into the far corner—I’m delighted he got this crucial goal for both himself and the team.”
