Sevilla reignited their hopes of staying in LaLiga with a vital 2-1 victory over a youthful Atletico Madrid side at Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, snapping a streak of three straight defeats in the top tier.
With his sights firmly set on the upcoming Champions League quarter-final second leg against Barcelona in just three days, Diego Simeone opted for the youngest starting XI of his extensive spell in LaLiga, boasting an average age of 23 years and 289 days, including three debutants. Unfortunately for Simeone, one of these newcomers gave away a penalty within the first ten minutes, as Dani Martinez was adjudged to have fouled Isaac Romero in the box after a lengthy VAR review.
Akor Adams successfully converted the penalty, marking the opening goal of Luis Garcia Plaza’s managerial stint, despite Juan Musso getting a solid hand to the ball.
This was undoubtedly a crucial match for the hosts, who are battling relegation, and Plaza’s team played with an energy that reflected their urgency.
However, Sevilla experienced a familiar sense of deflation in the 35th minute when Atleti equalised. Javier Bonar celebrated his senior debut in style, scoring with a well-placed header from Julio Diaz’s cross at the far post.
The 20-year-old’s moment of glory was short-lived, as Sevilla’s skipper Nemanja Gudelj restored the lead just before halftime, directing a header from Ruben Vargas’ corner into the net.
Sevilla came tantalisingly close to extending their lead just shy of the hour mark when Lucien Agoume found Romero in acres of space, only for the latter’s left-footed strike to rattle the post.
In reality, that was the only notable excitement in a second half that was devoid of the first half’s intensity. Neither team managed a single shot on target after the break, highlighting a clear absence of quality in the final third.
Nonetheless, this victory lifts Plaza’s men out of the relegation zone into a more comfortable 15th place, also putting an end to a run of three consecutive defeats against Atletico.
On the other hand, Simeone will likely remain unfazed by the outcome, even as his side suffered a fifth loss in their last nine league matches. Even if fifth-placed Real Betis triumph over Osasuna on Sunday, Atletico will still possess a nine-point cushion in the top four, with all eyes now on Barca’s impending visit to the Metropolitano.
