Sevilla reignited their hopes of staying in LaLiga with a vital 2-1 victory over a youthful Atletico Madrid team at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, putting an end to a troubling streak of three consecutive defeats in the top flight.
With his mind set firmly on the upcoming Champions League quarter-final second leg against Barcelona in just three days, Diego Simeone made the decision to field the youngest starting XI in his extensive LaLiga career, boasting an average age of 23 years and 289 days. This lineup included three players making their senior debuts. Unfortunately for Simeone, one of those debutants was responsible for conceding a penalty just minutes into the match when Dani Martinez was adjudged to have fouled Isaac Romero in the box after a protracted VAR review.
Akor Adams confidently converted the resulting penalty, marking the first goal of Luis Garcia Plaza’s reign, despite Juan Musso managing to get a firm hand to the ball.
This match was undeniably crucial for the hosts, who were battling relegation, and Plaza’s side exuded a confidence that was indicative of their situation.
However, Sevilla soon found themselves in familiar territory as Atleti equalised in the 35th minute. Javier Bonar made an impressive debut, connecting beautifully with Julio Diaz’s cross and heading home at the far post.
The 20-year-old’s moment of glory was fleeting, however, as Sevilla’s captain Nemanja Gudelj restored the home side’s lead right before half-time, heading in from a corner taken by Ruben Vargas.
Sevilla came agonisingly close to extending their lead shortly after the hour mark when Lucien Agoume found Romero unmarked, but his left-footed effort struck the post.
In truth, that was the lone highlight in a second half that lacked the fervour of the first, with neither team managing a single shot on target after the break, highlighting the deficiencies in both sides’ attacking play.
Nonetheless, this victory propels Plaza’s team out of the relegation zone and into the comparatively safe position of 15th, snapping a streak of three successive defeats in head-to-head encounters.
On the other hand, Simeone may take this defeat in stride, as it marked his fifth loss in the last nine league fixtures. Even if Real Betis, who sit fifth, secure a win against Osasuna on Sunday, Atletico will still retain a nine-point lead within the top four, with attention now turning to Barca’s upcoming visit to the Metropolitano.
