Outgoing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola will attract plenty of interest from some of Europe’s top clubs following his announcement to depart, yet the Spaniard claims he hasn’t given a thought to where his next role might be.
Iraola, who took over from Gary O’Neil in 2023, disclosed on Tuesday that he would be leaving the south coast side at the conclusion of the current season. Bournemouth currently sits in 11th place in the league with 45 points, having secured a victory against leaders Arsenal away from home last weekend.
“I haven’t got a clue. I don’t know if I’ll be coaching next season. There’s no rush for me to find out,” the 43-year-old Spaniard expressed on Friday, just ahead of the Premier League match against Newcastle United.
“We’ve made our decision, and it hasn’t been influenced by any other club.”
In the previous season, Iraola guided Bournemouth to an impressive joint-best finish in the top flight, securing ninth place with a record 56 points in the Premier League.
The manager revealed that Bournemouth had made considerable efforts to retain him and had offered a formal contract extension in December.
“I tried to communicate my feelings. I know they’ve been working on the future. This hasn’t taken me by surprise,” said Iraola. “During my time here, I’ve been very satisfied, and I’m reluctant to jeopardise that.”
“I’m full of energy and motivation to finish this season strongly. However, timing is crucial when it comes to leaving a position.”
Iraola acknowledged that it was challenging to inform his staff of his decision, but he emphasised his desire to conclude his tenure on a positive note as Bournemouth aims to secure a European spot.
His squad remains unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League matches and trails sixth-placed Chelsea by just three points.
“It’s true that it’s been difficult with some staff members who have been here for three years, as there is mutual respect,” Iraola noted.
“Some may not understand this decision, but we still have two months together to enjoy the time and create lasting memories.”
Reports from Sky Sports indicate that RB Leipzig manager Marco Rose is set to succeed Iraola at Bournemouth.
