Outgoing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola will find himself in demand from some of Europe’s elite clubs following his decision to depart, but the Spaniard insists he hasn’t given a thought to his next destination.
Iraola, who took over from Gary O’Neil in 2023, confirmed on Tuesday that he would be leaving the south coast club at the end of the current season. Bournemouth currently sits 11th in the league with 45 points, recently triumphing over league leaders Arsenal in an away match.
“I have no idea. I’m not sure whether I’ll be coaching next season. I’m not in a hurry to find out,” the 43-year-old Spaniard stated on Friday as he prepared for the Premier League encounter against Newcastle United.
“We made the decision, and it wasn’t influenced by any other club.”
In the previous season, Iraola guided Bournemouth to a joint-best top-flight finish of ninth place, achieving the club’s highest points tally in the Premier League with 56.
Iraola mentioned that Bournemouth had made every effort to keep him on board, even extending a formal contract offer in December.
“I attempted to communicate my feelings. I know they have been working towards the future. This isn’t something that has come as a surprise,” Iraola remarked. “During my time here, I have been immensely satisfied, and I don’t want to jeopardise that.”
“I’m full of energy; it’s not that I’m exhausted—I’m actually more motivated than ever to finish this season strongly. But sometimes you must choose the right moment to leave.”
He acknowledged that it was difficult to inform his staff but emphasised his desire to conclude his tenure on a high note as Bournemouth aims for a European qualification spot.
The team remains unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League matches and is just three points adrift of sixth-placed Chelsea.
“It’s true that with some staff members who have been here for three years, it has been quite challenging due to the mutual respect between us,” Iraola said.
“Some may not understand my choice, but we still have two months together, and we can celebrate and make lasting memories.”
According to Sky Sports, RB Leipzig manager Marco Rose has reached an agreement with Bournemouth to succeed Iraola.
