Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot expressed that the team’s 2-0 defeat of Fulham in Saturday’s Premier League clash has boosted spirits after a challenging series of losses. However, he cautioned that this victory is merely the first step as they approach a crucial week for the season.
Seventeen-year-old Rio Ngumoha delivered a stunning opening goal, quickly followed by a strike from Mohamed Salah, helping Liverpool maintain their fifth-place standing. Slot is optimistic that this win will create momentum as they prepare for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
Prior to this match, Slot’s team had not secured a league victory since late February and were reeling from significant defeats, including a 4-0 thrashing by Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals and a 2-0 loss to PSG.
While he acknowledged the improved atmosphere within the squad, Slot urged caution.
“It’s a better place now than it was two or three days ago or even a week ago, but winning one match won’t make everything perfect again,” he stated.
The Dutch coach praised the fans for the vibrant atmosphere during the match and called for their support to continue during the upcoming clash with PSG at Anfield.
“This victory is significant not just for the league but also as we look towards Tuesday; it’s important for both the players and the fans. Following a 4-0 defeat and a 2-0 loss, everyone really needed this win,” Slot remarked to the BBC.
“It’s clear that we will need our supporters on Tuesday. There were fans in Paris, but we encountered a tough challenge.
“Anfield has shown time and again that it can elevate the team, and we’ll need that once more. Half an hour before kick-off, the players must feel that support and sense it’s going to be a memorable evening again.”
Slot acknowledged Ngumoha’s groundbreaking goal, noting the teenager’s increasing impact on the team.
“One of his strengths is his ability to dominate in one-on-one situations,” Slot commented. “We’ve seen this season that as he’s gained more playing time, he’s shown he deserves it.
“When he’s on the pitch, he performs really well, and today he scored, which is crucial in football. Goals hold immense value.”
Salah, scoring in his first game at Anfield since revealing he will depart the club at the end of the season after a stellar nine years, resonated with supporters, who chanted his name.
“It’s essential for Mo to have scored this goal, but more importantly, it was vital for the team and the club that we secured the win,” Slot emphasised.
“For Mo to finish in the way he has so often, with that inside foot into the far corner… I’m delighted he netted such a critical goal for both himself and the team.”
