Aston Villa triumphed over Bologna with a commanding 7-1 aggregate victory, booking their place in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals. The stunning 4-0 win marks their ninth consecutive success in major European fixtures at home.
While Bologna’s aspirations of advancing seemed ambitious at the outset, a vigorous start provided some hope. Federico Bernardeschi tested the returning Emiliano Martinez with an early effort, and Jonathan Rowe appeared particularly threatening down the flank.
However, Matty Cash kept Rowe well in check, and Villa quickly demonstrated their cutting edge to seize the night’s lead.
An intricate passage of play through the midfield concluded with Emiliano Buendia’s pinpoint pass to Morgan Rogers, who unselfishly squared for Ollie Watkins to net his 100th goal for Villa, making him the first player in the club’s history to score 10 major European goals.
Immediately following the opener, Rogers’ well-placed shot required a save from Federico Ravaglia, who again denied the Villa forward from the penalty spot in the 25th minute, diving to his right to deal with Martin Vitik’s handball on Lucas Digne’s cross.
Refusing to be disheartened, Villa exploited Bologna’s lack of focus following that save. Digne’s throw-in was expertly controlled by Buendia near the dead-ball line, enabling him to cut inside and score at the near post.

Ravaglia’s near post was breached once more in the 39th minute by a determined Rogers, who blasted an effort past his nemesis of the night, finally ending a 12-match goal drought for both club and country.
That strike decisively sealed the tie, and despite Vincenzo Italiano’s attempts to reinvigorate his demoralised squad with a triple substitution at halftime, the second half proved to be a leisurely affair for Villa.
The hosts rarely pushed forward during the latter period, yet they still managed to score a fourth, courtesy of a stunning volley from Ezri Konsa.
This result signifies Villa’s sixth consecutive home clean sheet against Italian teams in major European competitions, while Bologna exits Europe on the back of a sixth straight away defeat to an English club, three of which have been suffered at the hands of Villa.
