Although they fell to a 2-1 defeat in the second leg of the UEFA Conference League quarter-finals, Crystal Palace’s first venture into a prominent UEFA tournament advances to the semi-finals after securing a 4-2 aggregate victory over Fiorentina.
Having established a three-goal advantage in the first leg, Crystal Palace were in a strong position, leaving Fiorentina with the task of pushing forward aggressively. However, their chances took a significant hit early on.
Palace were not content to simply defend their lead and extended their aggregate advantage within the first 20 minutes, as Daniel Munoz made a stunning run down the right flank, delivering a pinpoint cross for Ismaïla Sarr to header home, putting the Eagles in front for the night.
Fiorentina almost found themselves two goals down shortly after when they lost possession right from kick-off, allowing Sarr to sprint towards goal, only to have his shot thwarted by the swift reflexes of David de Gea.
Midway through the first half, the hosts were given a lifeline when Jaydee Canvot’s reckless challenge on Rolando Mandragora led to a penalty being awarded.
After a significant delay as Adam Wharton was treated off the pitch, Albert Gudmundsson confidently converted the penalty, sending Dean Henderson the wrong way and giving Fiorentina a glimmer of hope for a comeback.
Another goal for the home side before the break would have made for an exciting second half, and Manor Solomon nearly scored one when his long-range effort demanded a spectacular one-handed save from Henderson.
Fiorentina needed a moment of brilliance to inch closer to equalising, and substitute Cher Ndour delivered just that, firing a low strike from distance that found its way into the net within ten minutes of the restart.
Encouraged by this goal, Paolo Vanoli’s side continued to press forward, with both Gudmundsson and Harrison testing Henderson’s resolve with their attempts.

However, curious substitutions made by the Fiorentina manager, removing both Gudmundsson and Solomon—two of their standout attackers—seemed to impede their momentum.
In the final moments of the match, Palace’s instinct to protect their lead came into play as they held firm to deny Fiorentina any further chances, securing their place in the semi-finals, where they’ll face Shakhtar Donetsk.
Despite a commendable effort, Fiorentina’s spirited performance was not enough to grant them a fourth consecutive appearance in the semi-finals of the tournament, as they were eliminated in the quarter-finals for only the second time in their last 12 European matches of this kind.
