Although they suffered a 2-1 defeat in the second leg of their UEFA Conference League quarter-final, Crystal Palace’s inaugural journey in a significant UEFA tournament continues, as they overcame Fiorentina 4-2 on aggregate to advance to the semi-finals.
With a three-goal cushion from the first leg, Crystal Palace was the team under less pressure, while Fiorentina had the difficult task of shifting the momentum in their favour. Unfortunately for them, early in the match, their hopes diminished significantly.
Refusing to simply coast on their advantage, Palace extended their aggregate lead within the first 20 minutes, as Daniel Munoz charged down the right flank and delivered a pinpoint cross that Ismaïla Sarr headed in for the Eagles’ opening goal of the night.
Fiorentina nearly found themselves facing a two-goal deficit shortly after, when Sarr intercepted the ball right from the kick-off and broke free, but his shot was denied by the legs of David de Gea.
The hosts got a glimmer of hope midway through the first half when Jaydee Canvot’s reckless tackle on Rolando Mandragora led to a penalty being awarded.
Following a lengthy pause to allow Adam Wharton to depart the pitch, Albert Gudmundsson stepped up and confidently sent Dean Henderson the wrong way from the penalty spot, rekindling Fiorentina’s hopes for a comeback.
A goal before half-time could have shifted the balance of the match, and Manor Solomon came close to finding it, forcing Henderson into an outstanding one-handed save with a powerful long-range effort.
It was clear that Fiorentina would require something extraordinary to turn the tide, and substitute Cher Ndour provided just that within ten minutes after the interval with a low strike from distance that found its way into the bottom corner.
Paolo Vanoli’s side pressed on in search of another goal, with attempts from Gudmundsson and Harrison both testing Henderson’s determination.

However, some perplexing substitutions from the Fiorentina manager, who opted to withdraw his two most threatening forwards in Gudmundsson and Solomon, hindered their offensive rhythm.
As the match drew to a close, Palace exhibited their defensive resilience, fending off Fiorentina’s attempts and securing their place in the last four, where they will clash with Shakhtar Donetsk.
Fiorentina’s valiant effort fell short, preventing them from making a fourth consecutive semi-final appearance in this competition, as they were eliminated at the quarter-final stage for the second time in their last twelve European encounters.
