Daniel Wilmering salvaged a 1-1 draw for Newcastle, who currently sit at the top of the table, by scoring in the 94th minute against Adelaide United.
Ryan White showcased exceptional leadership for his team, netting the opening goal in the 72nd minute. Adelaide found the back of the net on two additional occasions, but both were disallowed before Wilmering capitalised on a late opportunity to equalise with virtually the last kick of the match.
This draw marks the second stalemate involving teams in the top four today, following Auckland’s draw with Melbourne Victory. Newcastle’s lead now extends to three points, while Adelaide moves up to third place, sitting one point above Melbourne Victory.
As the first half concluded quietly, Newcastle nearly took the lead when Zach Clough held possession in a congested penalty area and set up Xavier Bertoncello, whose shot grazed the outstretched leg of Ethan Alagic and hit the top of the near post.
The Jets had everyone fooled when, after a protracted discussion regarding who would take a free kick in a perilous position, Clayton Taylor made a run into the box. The ball was delicately played over the wall to him, allowing him to slot it home. However, the referee’s whistle interrupted the celebration, insisting the free-kick be retaken as he hadn’t authorised the quick take.
As the match approached the final quarter of an hour, both teams made several substitutions and quickly traded chances. Jonny Yull had the better opportunity, cutting in on his left foot and firing just wide of the far post.
The long-awaited goal arrived after Lachie Rose received an excellent pass from Clough but saw his shot thwarted by Joshua Smits. Shortly thereafter, Adelaide surged forward and took the lead when Anselmo executed a perfect turn, slipping the ball through to Ryan White, who deftly bypassed James Delianov and guided it home.
Just three minutes later, it looked like Adelaide had doubled their advantage when Anselmo’s pullback found Alagic, who finished with finesse. However, the VAR intervened, ruling the goal out as the ball had crossed the byline during the build-up.
Adelaide pressed forward again, and when Yull returned the ball to Anselmo, he attempted an overhead kick that seemed to be offside, prompting the linesman to raise his flag, preventing any celebrations.
In the dying moments, specifically in the 94th minute, Eli Adams fired a shot into the crowded penalty area. A deflection caused an awkward save from Smits, which was eagerly seized by Daniel Wilmering, who netted his first goal of the season to rescue a point for his side.
