Kodi Nikorima, the halfback for the Dolphins, found himself in a perplexing situation during his team’s match against Penrith, courtesy of a strange decision made by the Bunker. He was sent to the sin bin following a hip-drop tackle on Mitch Kenny, which resulted in Kenny being forced off the field due to a suspected leg fracture.
In the tackle, Nikorima had twisted and landed on Kenny’s legs, prompting the hooker to cry out in agony.
“You could hear the grimace in his voice,” noted Billy Slater on Nine’s coverage.
Initially, following the tackle, Nikorima was merely put on report, and it seemed he might remain on the field. However, as Kenny hobbled off, the referee summoned the Dolphins star for a sin binning.

Referee Adam Gee then made the decision to send him to the sin bin, with Slater commenting that it was a direct consequence of Kenny leaving the field.
“They were waiting to see if Mitch Kenny would continue playing… then suddenly he couldn’t, and the call changed. I’ve never witnessed anything like that before,” Slater explained.
“I felt it should’ve been a sin bin from the outset. They got that decision right, but it still feels quite strange.”
Expressing concern, Andrew Johns remarked that it was “a dangerous situation”.
Later, Nine’s Marlee Silva reported on the severity of Kenny’s injury, with Johnathan Thurston noting that it “went bang” the moment he attempted to place weight on it.

This unusual decision follows a previous instance where Luke Laulilii was penalised and suspended earlier this month due to an aerial challenge that resulted in a season-ending injury for Bailey Simonsson.
Tigers coach Benji Marshall referred to this as a “dangerous precedent” being set.
“We received some clarification from the NRL and the referees. They indicated that it was due to the severity of the injury. If there hadn’t been an injury, the decision would have been different,” said Marshall.
“That’s hard to digest. It certainly sets a concerning precedent. The referees aren’t medical professionals, so if a player feigns injury, resulting in a sin bin, what does that lead to?

“That said, I have great sympathy for Bailey and his injury as he was having a fantastic season.
“Luke’s action was accidental with no malicious intent. Nonetheless, that’s in the past now, and another player will get a chance.”
