According to Andrew Johns, a deal for Scott Drinkwater at $1 million per season would represent a “steal” for the Dragons.
The Saints have had a disastrous winless start to the season, with two players recently seeking early releases, and frustrated fans planning a significant protest during an upcoming match.
The struggling club has prioritised Drinkwater as a key signing, but he turned down their initial offer. They are considering restructuring the contract, and Johns is advocating for the club to commit to a seven-figure salary to secure his talents.
“If the Dragons manage to sign him for a million dollars a year over three years, that’s a fantastic deal,” he stated on Wide World of Sports’ Immortal Behaviour.
“They desperately need some creativity, and he can provide that from fullback. He’s entering that prime phase of his career—the next four years are going to be when he’s at his peak.
“So, for George Illawarra fans, bringing in Drinkwater would be a significant plus. He seems like a bloke who just gets out on the field and plays his game.
“But it’s crucial that this doesn’t turn into a media circus driven by his managers; if you’re going to sign him, just get it done.”

Bolstering the fullback position is critical for the club, with the Dragons seeking increased speed around the ruck.
Veteran leader Clint Gutherson is likely to stay with the team but may transition to a different role by 2027.
Drinkwater is one of the most coveted players in the market, as rival teams, including the Perth Bears and several Sydney franchises, are keeping a close eye on his situation.
The current turmoil at the Dragons isn’t favourable for their chances of attracting Drinkwater.

Just days after the news broke of Jayden Su’A wanting out, talented young forward Loko Pasifiki Tonga also requested an early release, despite being contracted until the conclusion of 2028.
With rising star Jaxson Purdue seen as the Cowboys’ future fullback, Drinkwater’s decision to pursue a move comes as no surprise.
The 28-year-old showcased excellent form, leading the Cowboys to a four-game winning run before their disappointing loss to Manly on Thursday night.
