According to Andrew Johns, securing Scott Drinkwater for $1 million a season would be a “steal” for the Dragons.
The Saints have had a dreadful start to the season, remaining winless so far. Two players have requested early releases, and frustrated fans are planning a large protest at an upcoming match.
The beleaguered club has earmarked Drinkwater as a key signing, but he turned down their initial offer. They are now looking to revise the terms, and Johns has encouraged the club to offer a seven-figure salary to clinch his signature.
“If the Dragons manage to sign him for a million dollars a year over three years, that’s an absolute bargain,” he stated on Wide World of Sports’ Immortal Behaviour.
“They are in desperate need of some creativity, and he can provide that from fullback. He’s entering that prime period; the next four years will be when he’s at his peak.
“So for George Illawarra fans, if you get Drinkwater, it’s a massive boost. He’s the type of player who just goes out and plays.
“But let’s hope this doesn’t play out in the media with agents involved; if you’re going to sign him, just get it done.”

The quest for a new fullback is a major focus for the Dragons, who are seeking greater pace around the ruck.
Veteran captain Clint Gutherson is anticipated to stay with the club but will likely transition to a different role by 2027.
Drinkwater is among the most coveted players in the free agency market, with interest from rival clubs like the Perth Bears and several teams based in Sydney closely tracking his status.
The current turmoil at the Dragons is unlikely to aid their recruitment efforts for Drinkwater.

Just days after Jayden Su’A’s request to leave, talented young forward Loko Pasifiki Tonga also sought an early release, even though he’s contracted until the end of 2028.
Emerging star Jaxson Purdue is seen as the future fullback for the Cowboys, influencing Drinkwater’s decision to explore a move.
The 28-year-old performed exceptionally well, leading the Cowboys to a four-match winning streak before their disappointing loss to Manly on Thursday night.
