Corinthians forward Memphis Depay shared a detailed message on X on Saturday evening, affirming his commitment to stay with the club beyond the World Cup. “My priority is Corinthians, full stop, and that extends beyond the World Cup,” he remarked.
Memphis has confirmed that he will miss this Sunday’s derby at Neo Quimica Arena against Palmeiras, as he is still recovering from a grade two muscle injury in his right thigh.
In his post, he indicated that complications during his recovery have left him unable to contribute, resulting in his absence from one of the most significant matches of the year to this point.
“I wanted to play tomorrow but, unfortunately, it’s not feasible due to some setbacks… This is painful and frustrating. Yet, players aren’t in a position to speak on this, yet we bear the blame. It’s simply not right!” he expressed.
“You can’t just lash out at players for getting injured… We need to explore this more deeply and ask the right questions,” he further elaborated in his lengthy post.
Currently, Corinthians is positioned 16th in the Brazilian Serie A, just above the relegation zone, and have been without Memphis since March 23rd, when he sustained the thigh injury in a match against Flamengo.
Recently, the player was cautioned for using his mobile phone on the bench during that match, justifying that he was in touch with the Dutch national team’s medical staff, as he is viewed as a vital player for their World Cup squad.
