Corinthians forward Memphis Depay took to X on Saturday evening to share an extensive message, affirming his commitment to the club beyond the World Cup. “My priority has always been Corinthians, and that commitment transcends the World Cup,” he noted.
Memphis announced that he will be absent from this Sunday’s derby at Neo Quimica Arena against Palmeiras, as he has yet to recover from a grade two muscle injury in his right thigh.
In his message, he indicated that complications during his recovery process have hindered his return, causing him to miss what is arguably one of the season’s most significant matches thus far.
“I pushed hard to play tomorrow, but sadly it’s not feasible due to some setbacks… This is both painful and frustrating. However, the players are often the ones who receive the blame when things go wrong. That’s unfair!” he expressed.
“We can’t simply condemn players for getting injured. We need to dig deeper and ask the right questions,” he added in his comprehensive post.
Currently, Corinthians find themselves in 16th place in the Brazilian Serie A, precariously sitting just above the relegation zone. Memphis has been out of action since March 23rd, when he sustained the thigh injury during a match against Flamengo.
Recently, he was cautioned for using his mobile phone while on the bench during that game, clarifying that he was in communication with the Dutch national team’s medical staff, as he is regarded as a vital player for their World Cup campaign.
