Newcastle has moved a step closer to securing the Premiers Plate after clinching a late equaliser against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park.
Eli Adams and Charles Nduka both netted twice in a thrilling encounter that saw shifts in momentum numerous times throughout.
After surviving an early barrage of chances from Victory in the first 15 minutes, Newcastle took the lead with a strike by Adams from outside the area on the counter-attack.
Patience from Jordi Valadon and Josh Rawlins during the second phase of a corner allowed the ball to find Nduka, who slotted in the equaliser just after the half-hour mark.
Nduka then scored his second only three minutes later, putting Victory ahead with a volley from Franco Lino’s expertly delivered cross from the left flank.
Victory continued with the same attacking approach in the second half, but the Jets’ defence managed to fend off their threats.
The rain arrived around the hour mark, bringing with it some sloppiness on the field; both teams struggled with the slippery conditions. However, the weather cleared quickly, boosting Newcastle’s momentum.
Adams netted the equaliser in the dying moments of regular time from the penalty spot after Lachlan Bayliss was deemed to have been fouled by Sebastian Esposito inside the area.
Xavier Bertoncello hit the crossbar with Newcastle’s best opportunity to snatch a winner, ensuring the match concluded at 2-2.
Victory will face Western Sydney in Parramatta next weekend for the final round of the season, while Newcastle will host Central Coast in the F3 derby.
