The Dolphins’ halfback Kodi Nikorima experienced an unusual reversal from the Bunker during his team’s encounter with Penrith. He was sent to the sin bin for a hip-drop tackle on Mitch Kenny, which resulted in Kenny leaving the field with a suspected fracture to his leg.
During the tackle, Nikorima twisted and landed on Kenny’s legs, prompting the hooker to cry out in agony.
Billy Slater remarked on Nine, “You could hear it in his voice; he was definitely in pain.”
Initially, it seemed Nikorima would remain on the field after being placed on report for the tackle. However, as Kenny hobbled off, the referee called Nikorima’s number.

Referee Adam Gee subsequently sent him to the sin bin, with Slater explaining that it was due to Kenny’s inability to continue.
“They were waiting to see if Mitch Kenny would be able to keep playing… and suddenly he couldn’t, which prompted the change in decision. I’ve never seen anything like it,” he stated.
“In my opinion, it should’ve been a sin bin from the outset. I believe they’ve made the right call, but it was quite peculiar.”
In a concerned tone, Andrew Johns remarked that it was “dangerous territory”.
Marlee Silva from Nine reported on the seriousness of Kenny’s injury, with Johnathan Thurston noting he heard a “bang” as soon as Kenny tried to put weight on his leg.

This decision reverses a previous instance where Luke Laulilii was sin-binned and subsequently suspended for an aerial contest that resulted in Bailey Simonsson sustaining a season-ending injury.
Tigers coach Benji Marshall expressed his concerns about establishing a “dangerous precedent”.
“We sought clarification from the NRL and the referees, and the reasoning was tied to the injury. If there hadn’t been an injury, it wouldn’t have been handled this way,” Marshall explained.
“That’s tough to accept. It creates a risky precedent. Referees aren’t medical professionals, so if someone stays down, pretending to be injured, and a player gets sin-binned as a result, what are we encouraging?”

“That said, I genuinely feel for Bailey; I like him and sympathise with him regarding his situation.
“From Luke’s perspective, it was an accident with no malicious intent, but that’s behind us now. Someone else will have an opportunity to shine.”
