
Quinn MacNicol, a rising star from Brisbane Roar, found the net with a spectacular long-range effort as the Subway Joeys launched their AFC Under-17 Asian Cup campaign, settling for a 1-1 draw against Vietnam.
The Joeys took the lead in the 41st minute during their Group B opener on Saturday (AEST), but Vietnam managed to claim a draw in Saudi Arabia, with Australia hitting the woodwork three times.
The Australian squad featured several Isuzu UTE A-League talents, including Jai Ajanovic (Central Coast Mariners), Besian Kutleshi (Western United), Charlie Parkin (Brisbane Roar), Haine Eames (Central Coast Mariners), MacNicol, Amlani Tatu (Adelaide United), Akol Akon (Western Sydney Wanderers), and Rhys Williams (Brisbane Roar) in the starting line-up. Meanwhile, Christian Pullella (Perth Glory), Jay Maltz (Sydney FC), Anthony Didulica (Western United), and Logan Sambrook (Central Coast Mariners) contributed from the substitutes’ bench.

All eyes will now be on Australia’s upcoming fixtures against Japan and the United Arab Emirates, as they aim to secure a top-two finish to progress into the knockout stage and qualify for the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup.
The Joeys will face the UAE on Tuesday (AEST).
